My vote is for a mountain cur. We have always had them. Easy to train and as smart or smarter than most people I know. We have a older dog and a 3 yr old pup of hers. They are great coon and squirrel hunting dogs. Both will lay on porch with chickens walking all around them but if strange dog, coon, or opposum comes into the yard and they see it, it's on.
