Just another thought, the only part that they test for rabies is the brain of the animal. Calling the local hospital ER might help give you the on call number of the person who handles the recovery of the necessary parts for testing, you might even try the Medical Examiners office.
I agree with the poster that said that you should speak with the parents of the child that was bitten and find out where they are in the process of determining the harm that their child has suffered, and if they need the animal for any purpose, if they do not, then the ball is firmly in your court.
