Dog+Chicken=?

I think it depends on the dog. I have two Boxers. My male couldn't care less about the chickens, and my female wants them for dinner. My male has a more skittish personality and is scared of the birds. My female is more aggressive, and very obsessive.

In a word No.

If the dog wants to "kill" chickens. 50 will just be 49 more than 1 to kill.
If you are worried about your chickens, you will need to keep them secure from the dog or keep the dog away from the chickens.

Imp

jomama is correct that if a dog is afraid of chickens already, 50 will give it 49 more reason to be afraid.

Having grown up w/ cats and dogs, I would bet on a cat everyday against a dog! However I do not have any experience w/ dogs and chickens. I suppose if you have a scaredy cat type of dog and an aggressive roo then the dog may not want that matchup. A dog w/ no fear is a chickens worst nightmare!!

i have a German
sheperd pup right now

I'd say no. My neighbor swears her sheperd wont hurt my chickens but her body language tells a different story. She wants to kill everyone.

I have one small dog(yorkee-po) who thinks she is a chicken sometimes and thinks they are playmates and i have 3 outdoor cats that couldn't care less about the chickens

If you raise the dog with the chickens (from a real young age), it should learn that the birds are its "pack" and wont harm them typically. Will even help protect them.

I don't believe that it is breed dependent but more on the personality of the dog itself. I have a 2+ year old chocolate lab who is sweet as can be. She does like to play with a couple of our roosters but runs like crazy. I think she is more interested in sniffing them than anything else. By the way, it is hysterical to watch a rooster and her face off, and she high tails it away when he comes at her.

The first day I got my chickens and ducks, I purposely introduced them, holding her back while allowing her to sniff and (yes) lick one to find out what they were. Since that day she has not really cared about going after them other than playing.

We also have 3 cats - one 12 yr old outside/inside and two 1.5 yr old inside cats. The outside cat could care less. The chickens have come right up to him and pecked the ground all around him while he just lays there. The two younger cats have made beelines for the chickens and ducks if you are not careful when opening the sliding glass door to our patio.
