I have an eletric fence about 6 inches from the ground around the bottom of my run. Late yesterday i saw a dog coming crouched down sneaking to the fence it got five yards and made a spring to scare the chickens. When it hit the hot wire it was knocked down. It left howling and running with it's tail stuck between it's legs. My wife said '' is that dog hurt''. my answer was anything that can yell that loud and run that fast is not hurt to bad.

I got out one day, a while back, to finf=d a small white dog tangled in the hot woire that is behind my chickens pen.
I originally aan hot wire to keep my buck goat from escaping, and added along one part to keep a dog I had from messing with the fence.
Well, it worked for her.
and I went and disconnected the hot wire, little dog took off.
I did meet the same dog later, down the alley. was okay.
I doubt she was ever going to go near where that wire "bit" her.
Most animals learn after a bite or two, and don't always have to have it hot all the time. I would not want the chickens free ranging near that wire, I don't know if they'd have sense enough to stay away from it.
Anyway, the hot wire is a deterrent for most predators, once they contact about 2400 volts, they are not likely to sample it a second time. Buck goat is another matter, he may test it from time to time, but most of the time he won't go near it. LOL
