So today (while at home and on a conference call!) I notice that my dog and my visiting sister's dog are chasing after one of the chicks who got out of the coop area. Chaos ensued for a bit and my dog, Who is very protective of the checks since we have had them, gets a hold of the chick in her mouth. She ran across the yard as my daughter and I screamed to drop it. Finally as I approached she let it drop into my hands. I held the chick for a short time in my hands before I tried to place it down on the ground to see if she could stand on her legs. She could and she (a couple of hours later) seems fine I am just wondering if there's anything I should look for in terms of internal damage ?? I feel bad because all scolded my dog but in the end she really was gentle. She held her so gently in her mouth and I think it was because my sister's dog was here that she did not come to us right away .

Dogs are unpredictable around chickens, especially baby chicks. It's a predator/prey reaction. Dogs untrained to be around chickens should not be trusted.

That said, it's good news the chicks appears unharmed. You will need to wait and see if it suffered internal damage. The lungs are most vulnerable. You would hear a clicking noise if there was lung damage.

As a precaution I recommend give your chick electrolytes in its water for a couple days to counter possible shock.

Sounds like no harm was done. Others have not gotten off so easy. It's hopeful that your chick will be okay.

Yup! Fluffy, squeaky jerky movements ,runs away, flitters ,flutters , oh boy! its food !...or a toy.

One day the neighborhood kids let all of my chickens out . I came out in the backyard and there they were running around. my smooth collie was with me. she went running over and grabbed one of those chickens in her mouth. I don't think she was going to eat it ,I think she was just going to hold it for me. Chicken was okay, not hurt. I looked at her and yelled," put that bird down!". she looked at me and spit it out like, oh man!
