Dog nightmares!

My dog has nightmares all the time. I took him to the vet for it. He flinches, yelps, and I try to wake him but he snaps at me in his sleep. Then he wakes up and runs to hide behind me. I have helped the problem by putting a blanket on him so he feels secure. Any more suggestions?

I am assuming this is a rescued dog. They often have nightmares. I had one that would scream in the night. Yes, A blanket can help.
Also sometimes protein before bed helps, and they sell calming chewable pills at pet stores that might help. Trauma can come from as far back as their rank in their litter. Some dogs out grow it when in a balanced environment with a solid alpha human leader. I know one that moans at night even after 9 years. I know she was from abandoned pups and the rest of the pack of pups picked on her. Good luck with her.
