Hi everyone,

I figured I would post an update on my dog situation.

A long while ago, I posted about how to train my Doberman mix. The situation was that he was trying to bite people who came into the fence. He actually bit one person who did. The second problem was him digging.

He has been successfully trained not to bite. He does alert us when people come to the house, he does bark, but he has learned not to try to bite. Instead, when people come into the yard, he goes straight into his crate.

Concerning the digging, it appears he grew out of it. He does still dig on occasion, but not that often. Even then, he mainly digs up the seed potatoes in the garden. I don’t know why, maybe he smells them.

Anyway, that’s all for the update. I declare training this dog a success.

Regards,

Jared

Thank you both. I’m so glad I did not give up on him myself. He just needed a lot of love and a lot of training. He is a rescue dog after all.

One thing is still bothering me, though. Why the heck was he digging up my seed potatoes?

It’s not a problem anymore, as the seed potatoes have already sprouted and rooted. However, it was a problem in the past.

Anyway, He does the funniest and cutest thing when a train goes by the city. I live about 1 mile away from railroad tracks. Every time a train passes and he hears the train horn go off, he starts howling. It’s like he’s joining the train horn.

I’ll try to get a video.

I would assume he likes the smell of them. Does he try to eat them or roll on them? He also could just think they are a toy. He'd probably be a good candidate to do scent work training.

All I know is he likes to dig them up. He doesn’t eat them.

He might just be a good candidate for scent training. I’ve heard some dogs in France are trained to smell and locate truffles, which grow underground. Maybe I could train him to track down potatoes when the time comes to harvest.

That's so awesome! Good job!!!

congratulations! What is he mixed with? I have a Doberman/german shepherd mix myself and he’s also been a handful. But he’s overall a good boy, but at nine he has yet to slow down.

I always thought dogs howl at sirens and similar noises because the sound hurts their ears. I no longer believe this. I think these sounds are in a range that triggers an automatic response, the way one wolf's howling will trigger responsive howling in other members of the pack. We may never know, as we'd have to ask the dogs and they don't seem to be talking. Not to us, anyway. 😉
