My ranch dog is pregnant right now and best I can figure she is due about the 15th. I noticed today she has been restless but lazy and just started lactating. Are dogs like horses and start lactating soon prior to giving birth? And before you ask no I havent taken her to the vet, not going to take her to the vet. Our vet doesnt do small animals.

Actually, it varies from b*tch to you get it. Some will show breast development and some won't. Amazingly, I have had some with very little mammary development that milked like dairy cows. Doesn't sound as if you are in any trouble at this point in the game. Good luck with the litter.

LOL....shes got some big ol mammory glands hanging...probably bout 1/2 full maybe. My last dog gave birth while I was away at work so I didnt notice anything (used to work out of town for weeks at a time)

I look at active lactation as a pretty good sign that things are going to happen within a few days. I have checked a Mommy to be and have seen the milk come in about four days before they go into labor, but sometimes its been longer than that. And sometimes not at all until they give birth.

usually if theres milk present puppies will be here very soon, usually within days.
make sure shes got somewhere warm and dry to have them and i hope youve got supplies on hand incase she runs into a problem/emergency since your not planning on vetting...
for her sake i hope things go smoothly and she doesnt end up needing a c-section, retains a puppy or placenta ect...
