i just wanted to add a REPUATABLE breeder will ALWAYS be responsible for any animals they produce, you will NOT find a dog from a repuatable breeder in a shelter unless theres osme very strange circumstances as GOOD breeders have contracts that if a dog cannot be kept it MUST be returned to the breeder for rehoming.

any puppy i produce is microchiped with MY information as primary on the chip, they are also contractually obligated.
should one of my "products" end up in a shelter for ANY reason the scannced chip shows my information and i am to be contacted imediatly to pull the dog from the shelter, it comes home wiht me, has full vet work done and after some evaluation time i will then find it a new home myself...so truly responsible breeders dont add to the pet over population issue in all actuallity.

I havent had a female dog in a LONG time but I have had all the males we have owned neutered.

I always spay/neuter my dogs..i think that it helps with their mood/temperment. Also before i got my mastiff fixed he was starting to spray my couch...

(couch is gone now..and hes fixed..)
also... i get my cats fixed for the same reason...spraying... and i cant stand a cat in heat yowling all night long and spraying my furniture and bleeding all over my house..

So as of right now..all my dogs/cats and even my 2 male pot belly pigs are fixed..

edited to add..i dont spay neuter for animal population control... Again..i just do it for urine marking/spraying and for temperments.
I actually let my cat get pregnant a couple of years ago... i still have her 2 sweet babies here with me.... because i couldnt find a home that i trusted enough to take them and keep them forever...
See..that would be my problem if i let my animals reproduce..i'd have to keep all the babies..and that would get a bit expensive.

I think if people want to let their dog/cat have babies..well thats fine! (Its really no different then being a breeder... IMO.. no difference at all.. because their pups/kittens also add to the pet population..pedigree or not...)
As long as you are 100% responsible for those babies.... either to a good home..(someone that you REALLY know and trust)... or keep them yourselves. Sadly..this hardly ever happens though... *sigh*

We always spay and neuter our dogs. I don't raise show dogs, and in California the pet overpopulation is out of control. The lack of responsibility on the part of owners who don't spay and neuter are creating such a big problem that now everyones rights to breed is in danger. In theory, think you should be able to decide to spay or neutor and that owners should be responsible. Sadly, there are lots of irresponsible people out here. Now even though I don't like it, i support mandatory spay and neutor in our state. I don't want to support it, but after seeing the volume of wasted lives thrown away in the shelters, I have to support mandatory spay & neuter. (By the way, the law doesn't prevent you from breeding, it just means that you have to pay a "kennel fee" if you plan to raise dogs).

I spay/neuter dogs and cats, I only keep male rats and my doves eggs are replaced with painted marbles... I do have a rooster but we eat our eggs, I'll allow a broody to keep her eggs when I get a broody...

There are an estimated 307 million people in the US an 77 million dogs.
Thats an average of 87 humans an 22 dogs for every square mile in the US.
The only overpopulation problem in the world is of humans. We try to manipulate the population of other animals to make more room for us an our belief that the rest of the wild kingdom should bow to our territory. We kill thousand of animals every day, not for food but just because they were on our domain. We then complain about the overpopulation of said animals so we do not have to admit that us as humans are the real issue.

I will only"fix" an animal if it is medically necessary not because I think it is my right as a human to play god with nature.

Well this is an interesting and informative thread and I thank Jamie for starting it and everybody else for posting their opinions. I have recently rescued a cross bred pup who should grow to be a LARGE dog. I was planning to get her spayed at 6months....Why? because it is just what your "suppose" to do as a "responsible" pet owner. That is what my parents did with our pets when we were children...and I have honestly never really thought about it.

After reading this thread I think I will be putting her spay off until the age of 2.

And 'if" an accidental pregnancy occurs, I will just spay her then( have done this with rescued cats before).

i have 2 intact males and 3 intact females. we have yet to have a accidental litter. we really watch all the dogs when its time for each female to come in heat. i dont like to spay or neuter unless it is needed. we have a very good fence where the dogs are, its burried 8inches under the ground and its 6+ feet tall very sturdy. there are many dogs that run loose here, i think we are the only ones here that keep our dogs behind a fence. the girls NEVER go out side alone if its even near their time to be in heat. we have been doing it this way for years it has worked well for us!
