I have a problem with our German Wirehaired pointer. If I set an egg down somewhere, even for a minute, he grabs it and eats it, I think? I left an egg on a small table and wondered what happened to it and then I found a few small pieces of shell on the floor and assumed Jesse ate it! Now everytime I collect eggs he will run up to me like he would LOVE to grab it and eat it! Does anyone else have this problem?

Teach the "leave it "command. Best two words a dog can learn!

My dogs are hunting dogs and once I say leave it, they do. The drool will sometimes pool underneath them, but leave it they do. They love eggs and I do share!

My friend John is seriously old, country folk. Im talking back country whoodoo, here. You cant even call him a redneck - he lived so far back in the woods that his neck never had the chance to get red.

Here's what he would tell you.

"Yessir, aint nuttin' worse than an egg suckin' dog! You gotta break em right away.
Here's how ya do it....

Give him an egg, today.

Tomorrow, boil an egg, and when he comes running for the treat - shove the spittin' hot egg down his throat and hold his jaw shut til the egg cools in his mouth.

Two or three days of this and he 'aint likely to want any more of your eggs."

Crude, I know, and not much "dog whispering" going on there. But he allows that it works.

My dog also loves eggs (most dogs do) and he thoroughly checks the barn and area every day to find any eggs that were laid by my free ranging hens. It's kinda a game to see who can find the eggs first... him or me.

Now, when I have already found the eggs... they are mine and he's not allowed to touch them. I also taught him the "leave it" command when he was young and he also obeys... all the time. I can set eggs down in front of him and he may give me that forlorn, "I haven't eaten in hours" look but he doesn't touch them. If he ever looks like he might decide to disobey -- I send him away to get him out of temptations way.

This is about how it works at my place. Eggs (or other food) in the yard is up for grabs. Once it's in my possession though, it's MINE and they all know it. It's still mine if it's on the table, etc. but if I leave them down on floor level (if I collected them in a bucket and set it down, for example) they think it's for them. A general rule at our house, if it's on the table it's off limits, but if it's on the floor it's for the dogs. Sometimes I forget the rules myself, not the dog's fault. I keep egg cartons on the table all the time, and they don't touch them there.

"leave it" is a good thing to teach for LOTS of reasons!!! Mine know the principle, though I just tell them a stern "no".

EVERYTHING eats eggs! Including chickens. Either train the dog to leave em alone, or train yourself to keep em out of reach.

I once had a carton of eggs sitting on a bucket outside the henhouse, while I was feeding the birds. The carton wasn't closed because one of the eggs was a huge double-yolker. I looked around, and my big egg was gone! Found it half-way down the yard...my pomeranian had it! I still have no idea how that tiny little dog carried off that huge egg. And he hadn't even broken it!!!!
