Could you use one of the 5 gal auto waters like people use for their pets for chickens. If not why?

We use two of them in the field during the day while the birds free range. However, I only keep them outside of the coop. They scratch shavings into the bowl otherwise.Could you use one of the 5 gal auto waters like people use for their pets for chickens. If not why?

Yep that is the kind with the water jug like that goes upside down. I do not have the base anymore I was trying to make something work this morning and still have not got it quite figured out. I may be able to buy just the base somewhere. I have a metal 1 gallon waterer now. But was wanting to add to it without buying a $40 one at the store. I have been checking out the ones on here. If I get it figured out I will post pictures. You could but if it has an open top they will make a mess-literally- in it and you will have to clean it often. I'm not exactly sure what kind of waterer you are talking about, is it a 5 gal bucket type thing upside down with a drinking bowl at the bottom? That would work put they are probably going to roost on top of the bucket and make some deposits to the bowl area.
