Hi~This is my first post on here and I just had to share my story about my dog, Brindle. He is an appx. 10 year old lab mix (we took him in as a stray 10 years ago so we're not sure what he is!) We recently acquired 4 Buff sex-link RIR/RIW when they were about 10 days old. The first time we introduced him to the chicks, he literally tried to snatch them out of our hands! Of course we were terrified that it would turn into a disaster as we wanted them to free-range in our back yard. 4 days ago (they are now almost 5 weeks now), my husband and I took the baby chicks to the back yard and explained to Brindle that he is to watch over these babies and NOT to eat them. Holding him on a leash, we slowly walked him closer toward the little darlings, his legs and entire body quivering with excitement! (I was thinking he was hungry for chicken dinner). Instead, he immediately started pushing him all over the yard in a group until he got them to a patch of tall grass that was between a couple of trees. Every time they tried to come out, he would whine and push them back into the grass as if he wanted them to stay hidden. He hasn't let them out of his sight since, even wanting to go in the garage where the brooder is kept. I make him come in the house at bedtime, but as soon as we wake up, he is right back with those chicks, herding them all over the yard the entire, keeping them in a group. When one of the chicks begins to wander off, he jumps up and gives it a nudge to put it back with the others. We have now nicknamed him Chicken Mama, and we are so amazed at how attached he has become to them. I guess he won't be barking, "Winner, winner, chicken dinner!" Hopefully I will have photos to share. PS-We have another dog who doesn't even acknowledge the fact that the chicks exist. Aren't we Blessed??
Thank you for letting me share. Does anybody have similar experiences?
