Dog!

I have two goldens, one of them almost killed a neighbor's chicken in the yard two years before I got my chickens. The dogs chase everything outdoors including wild turkeys. I taught them not to chase my chickens by raising the peeps in the house. The dogs were not allowed in the indoor peep room until I told them it was OK to come in. Then at first they had to lie down if they wanted to watch. They were very excited at first, but eventually stopped staring at them like they wanted to eat them. Then I knew it was safe to let the them all together. I never let the dogs lick or shove the peeps with their nose. The peeps became part of their pack. When I moved the peeps outside they were afraid of the big world at first...and followed the dogs around for protection!

Folks we have been down this road a gazillion times. The only true way to keep your dog from hurting, including eating one of your chickens is to keep them apart.

A Dog is A Dog is A Dog. You can train it, you can beat it, but it's still a dog. Some will do it, some wont. It won't be the dogs fault because a dog is still just a dog.

Before you let dog and chickens meet be sure the dog has a rock solid "leave it." I trained an intense ex-military dog to nose touch my chicks since they were 3 days old. Now she helps me keep them where I want them when I tell her--she waits in front of them and if they move forward she gently pushes them back with her nose! They are so used to her and aren't afraid at all. You need to be in control and give lots of praise when they are good. Never leave them alone together unless you are 100% sure it's safe--and that's incredibly difficult.
