Dogs and Chicks totally stumped please help

It's YOUR job to teach the dog that the birds are off limits.

I can trust my dogs around adult birds, and my rooster will take care of his ladies too, but the dogs stay 100% either under MY direct supervision or completely separated from chicks. Dunno why they want the chicks so much and ignore the adults, but they do.

There is no "magic" breed that is always good, my Chow mutt is pretty good - partly because of her training and partly coz she's just too lazy to chase chicksn! LOL
But there are lots of highly-prey-driven breeds that are less-good, so you would want to avoid a highly-driven, full of energy type dog. Even if they didn't automatically chase the birds, they might get "bored" and start chasing them just for lack of anything else to do.

I have a standard poodle who picked up one of my chicks that got out of the brooder, and brought it in to me. He has a lovely soft, gentle mouth, and doesn't chase the chickens.

The neighbor's chicken might have been seen as an invader into your dog's territory.

My dogs acted more aggressive toward my chickens until I moved and just turned everyone out together in the fenced yard. I don't let the dogs around young chicks but they are fine with the hens and roosters and three of my dogs are pitbulls, three are labs, a pug, an australian shepherd mix, a sheltie, two huskey mixes, a rat terrier, a lab mix and a tan and black coon hound mix.

I have two Standard Poodles and they have killed 24 chickens and 6 rabbits. I won't trust them ever again around my birds or furballs. I thought that "shock therapy" would work, but it doesn't so they are getting their in-ground fence put in this week and the chickens will have a hot wire all the way around their pasture.

Love my dogs, but I will find a way to keep them and my other animals.

I have 2 LGD that are with the chickens, they where raised with them and being livestock gaurding dogs (NOT sheep, herding or gaurd dogs) they will protect them from anything....

I'm sorry, your poor chickens. I guess it isn't a breed thing, but an individual dog thing. It's really interesting.

My border collie/lab mix LOVES chickens... she started by chewing on them, making them squeak, and leaving them frightened and wet... They were a few months old... and she kept hopping the 4 foot fence... then, one day, i came home and she'd popped one. I yelled at her, and was very upset... and she hasn't shown any aggression towards them since.. except she does love to chase the rooster... but she never wants to catch him.. if he gets tired, she stops chasing, and goes and pesters the ducks for a while...

OMGosh that is too cute like an all natural squeeky toy, but the popping not so cute. glad she learned her lesson and doesnt want to upset mommy again.
