Dogs and Chicks

Funny story......I have 50 - 3 week old chicks. My dog, Kody, Pit bull/boxer mix has been really good with them so far and very well trained dog. He is very non agressive towards them. I have been very careful to make him understand these are off limits. The other day I was taking care of the chicks and had the cover off the brooder. The dog is forever attached to my hip. I was watching Kody very closely to give him his "back off" cue if he moves too far. Now for the funny part, he sticks his nose in the brooder and is smelling a few chicks. The chicks are curious and all crowd around his nose. One very brave chick...probably a future roo hauls off and pecks the heck out of his nose, the dog yelps and ran away. Now he will not even come in the room the chicks are in. He lays in the doorway and watches me but will not enter....I laughed so hard....

Well I didn't raise and train molly. I first dog sat here for a man who was having surgery. Almost a year later and she is still with us. There is no way I would let her near my chickens!! I am putting barb wire at the top just to discourage her. She bit the wing of a chick as I was holding her in the coop so my daughter could pet her. I catch her standing up looking in the coop. Dan is going to reinforce the fence and the first time I catch her or Rufus near it I will let go with the water gun. Rufus hates getting wet.
