dogs ears

Sounds like alot of people have the same problem. Thanks fo all the info ya all. I just love this site.

We use Epi-Otic Advance. The regular Epi-Otic is ok, but i'd have to clean my Bloodhound's ears 3+ times a week with it as they'd get itchy again. It's been over a week since I used the Advance and they don't smell at all, and aren't bothering her.

Blue Power Ear Wash Recipe INGREDIENTS:

16 Oz. Isopropyl Alcohol

4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder

*16 Drops Gentian Violet Solution 1%

Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well.

Shake this solution every time you use it to mix the Boric Acid Powder. Either a baby ear syringe or a plastic squirt bottle work well for putting the solution in the ear.

This stuff WORKS, but dont put it on anything you dont want to be purple!

My older lab suffered for years from yeast infections. We tried ear canal flushes, antibiotics, maintenance Epi Otic and also Oti Clens and the apple cider vinegar/alcohol rinse. They all worked for awhile but never totally cleared the infections up.
It all came down to a food allergy.
Now that he's on a grain free diet, EVO large bites & a dollop of the 95% Evo Venison on top he's not had a recurrence in years. I also give him grain free treats.

It may cost more for the food, but in the long run of all the vet visits and aftercare, it's far less than I used to spend.
With this food, they eat less and it's utilized more as well.
There are several grain free foods out there. Just try it for 6 weeks and see if it doesn't help. That's the usual time for any kind of dietary help, especially elimination diets, to show the complete results.

It is true that the long eared breeds are going to be more prone to yeast infections/bacterial infections...specially if they go in and out of water a lot as well.

first i wanted to say HOW do you keep chickens having SIX hound mixes????, we had a hound mix, and we have a pitbull x hound, the prey drive on BOTH of these dogs is...

hahah, I love hounds, though they are great dogs.

when i want little we had a cocker that got bacterial infections in his ears, i think we used salt water to kill the bacteria, then baking soda to clean the ears out??, i can't exactly remember, but I'm pretty sure thats what my step mom did

if you want no corn or wheat look at the maxwell dog food it has goodstuff and no wheat or corn. Its the walmart brand but not the cheap ol'roy.

I second the no-corn diet. I use Zymox to treat the ears. It is not a medication, but it has enzymes derived from milk that breaks down the cell membranes of bacteria and also zaps yeast. The organisms can't build up an immunity to it. It is a clear gel that comes in a sqeeze bottle and you fill the ear canal, squish it and massage it down into the ear and leave them alone. The yuk liqufies and the dogs can shake it out in a day. Keep treating for a week or so. That stuff is like magic. You don't us it with any other medications or ear washes. Just the Zymox. That stuff is DA BOMB!!! I just got a bottle in the mail yesterday. I googled til my fingers were bleeding and this was the best deal on it I could find. Hope this helps.

Make sure if you are using the vinegar/alcohol mixture that their ears aren't extremely inflamed or have any scratches/open sores. That would be extremely painful to have alcohol poured on to!
I have heard good things about Tea Tree Oil drops for their ears also.
