Dogs eating chickens

I had 2 dogs when I got chickens in 2021 and spent 2 years desensitizing and training them. My chickens stayed in predator proof coops and runs 24/7 and my dogs stayed indoors or on a leash until fully trained before I turned my chickens loose. This photo was taken in 23 when I first started free ranging (I didn't put my dogs outside and an unknown predator chased them all out of the woods that day) These 4 hens won't leave the run anymore

My dogs were overly interested and uncontrollably excited around my first ducks so I kept them separated but visible until they lost some interest. Then they were all out in the open for periods with supervision. I used my voice to stop them if they got too focussed, made them sit and then brought a bird close to them to let them investigate while praising them showing them I love the birds etc. All one big safe family now. It didn't take long. The heeler was maybe 9 at the time and the kelpie was 1.

Wow, 2 years is a long time. I train my dogs from the moment they enter my house ( I use handfeeding when they are young, you can probably find info online for handfeed training as I'm sure someone has written a book ). My dogs learn as puppies that what is mine is mine. Rabbits - mine, goats- mine, ducks-mine, chickens-mine. I bring whatever it is into my house and tell my dogs to leave it, it's mine and they ignore whatever it is. Ten minutes of my time and it's one and done. I do, of course, continue to train my dogs in high level obedience. I use Ivan Balabanov's "Obedience without Conflict". I have 3 trained in water rescue, all trained in SAR, and 1 trained in IPO/KNPV. The only one to give me trouble was the Catahoula, she is always "oh look, squirrel" but still compliant to any command given. Pics - catahoula at 3 months ignoring the rabbit and four on a sit/stay. For me, training is easy and enjoyable.

Here's some advice, if you are trying to break your dog from chasing chickens! We have a little Maltese, Chihuahua and he loves to go after chickens. We have a shock collar and he has been doing great! Every time he chases chickens we shock him.( We have to be careful shocking him too much because he's little..) We let him run free with a shock collars a few times a day, and he loves it!!! If you are trying to break your dog from chasing chickens I recommend a shock collar!!
