people need to take care of there animals keep them tied up or keep them in the fence . if u have one acre or one thousand acres
if it strays into someones property . they could get shot in order to protect our animals... i feal sorry for the person whos dog got shot , they blamed it on hunters ,,, i dont think anything is in season right now so i question if thats the case . all i know is most places its the law not lettting your dog run wild , im from Va WVa area and i have to carry my kimber with me all the time just to protect my birds ,dogs or live stock . its bad enough the cats are running free to kill all the song birds they dont threat live stock !
so please take care of your pets or dont cry to me if someone else takes care of them

I mostly agree with you. When Dad was at work and relatives were visiting, an uncle was nice enough to shoot a neighbor's dog that was killing our chickens. When a pack of dogs had some cows and calves circled and were trying to pick off a calf, my brother shot the leader. I have absolutely no problem taking care of animals that are threatening livestock and we never blamed it on hunters. Most people that grew up in that type of environment are quite understanding, but not all. And the urban area is different from the rural.

When I moved to my current home, I knew that the neightbors had been letting their dogs roam the countryside for generations. I'm not going to change that. I keep my dogs in a 30' x 80' pen as I don't have the space to keep them away from the neighbor's livestock, though as one told me, once they get kicked a time or two, they'll stop bothering the cows. One of my dogs looks a whole lot like a coyote too. I don't think it would last long if it were running free. I've discussed it with my neighbors and we agree that livestock is more important than a dog.

I think if you move into an area you need to find out what the local traditions are and you are responsible to work within those traditions. They have worked out ways over the generations to keep livestock and dogs. Some of those may seem harsh to people not used to them, but most rural people consider dogs working animals, usually for warning and protection but sometimes hunting, and not really pets. However, some rural people do really get attached to their dogs too.

Just my opinion. I'm sure several will disagree.

It sounded to me as if that dog was on its own property. Or if not on there land very close to the house where no one should be hunting. It may not be hunting season, doesn't mean there aren't hunters. Anyone who will hunt where they aren't supposed to might not follow a lot of rules.

A neighborhood dog that is always running my neighborhood, and I live out in the country, dug under my fence and killed one of my hens. I have let all of my neighbors know that if I see that dog around my chickens again it won't be going home. No one has told me who owns the dog but everyone seems to have seen it around. I have caught it in my trash many times.

Any time a dog or any predator comes messing with my livestock, it DOES NOT leave the property. In others words predator season here is year round. Some of my closer neighbors have asked me to shoot any predator I see on their land. You may have a few chickens as pets, here we have livestock that is ore living. THE ONLY RULE HERE IS "KEEP YOUR DOG AT HOME OR LOSE IT". Our main predators are bear, mountain lion and city folks dogs.

Actually it DOES mean there arent "hunters"

They would be POACHERS, or CRIMINALS, or FOOLS, but they wouldnt be "hunters"

Reality is , no one KNOWS who shot that dog, or WHY they shot the dog.

But people shouldnt blame every shooting incident on "hunters", when the truth is most HUNTERS would NEVER shoot someones dog without a good reason

i take it a step farther and only bow hunt big game but dogs after my live stock will answer to 45 cal kimber or an Ar-10. i would feal bad to have to do thaT BECAUSE I ONLY KILL IF I AM GOING TO EAT IT !
but no dog meat for me lol!
