Okay I'll try to make this short...basically I have 6 pullets that came from Mt. Healthy (TSC) back in March. They are in a tractor with enclosed run but are allowed supervised free ranging. We are fencing our yard and I wanted other opinions on putting the chicken tractor inside the fenced area. My dogs will be using the area as well as dogs that I foster. They wouldn't be out at the same time as the chickens, but is salmonella or other diseases something I should worry about with them sharing the yard? I can leave the chickens outside the fenced area if I need to. Thanks in advance!

We had a collie kennel for 15 yrs. Chickens have 2 kinds of pop . One is called caocal poop. Dogs love it. It's like M&M's to them. I found out about this when my one collie girl went out to "help" me with the chickens. She ate some and I didn't notice until she threw up on my bed. Fence off an area for the birds. I think you will rue the day you let your dog in the same area as the birds. Also, if you are worming your birds with Ivermectin, and you dog is eating the eggs or running on ground the birds were on, then you need to have the MDR1 test done on your dog to make sure it is not sensitive to Ivermectin. This is esp. true if your dog is all or part herding breed. Best, Karen

Thanks! I think I have decided to leave the coop outside the fence for now.

In general, dogs are not susceptible to salmonella, unless they have a compromised immune system. Dogs are carnivores designed to eat raw meat and handle the bacteria that comes with it. So salmonella should not be an issue with your dogs.
