Doing It Again...Eggs Went in Hova Today (Candling Report Page 3)

Cynthia I bow to you! You have provided me with so much information and I appreciate it so very much. I'm looking forward to school starting up again so I can have the students researching on some of these sites. I'm reading a great thread right now on a bread box incubator! I picked up several at an auction in El Paso that were in a box with another item I wanted, we are going to make a couple of "bread-bators" when school starts up.

You are very welcome. You'll find plenty of people to feed your new addiction around here, believe me! There is a wealth of information and experience on BYC, plus support and a shoulder to cry on when you need it, all in all, a great place to spend some time.

When I figure out how to post them I'll put on some pics of the styrofoam incubators my students made. I was very proud of them, especially since they are 6th graders and have never even thought of something like this before.

My 16 yr. old son just put together a candler out of a mag lite and a black spray paint lid. I showed him the site you sent me Cynthia and told him tomorrow we would buy the stuff to make one. Wish I could think as fast as he does!

If you have an old slide projector, that's what I use to candle. I just turn it on it's backside so the beam shines upward and put a washcloth with a hole cut in it over the lens. Shows lots of detail! My little maglite is my backup.

I don't have a slide projector,,,, but I'll be looking around for a setup I can use permanently. He just checked the eggs we are trying in the Hovabator and there didn't seem to be anything going on in them. Although, a couple had spots that moved in them when you moved the egg. In the past we just hoped they hatched, we never tried candling and it probably would have saved us days of waiting and the final heartbreak.

That's really gross! I don't know anything that would eat the taste of soap! Your chickens must be really hungry or lacking a vitamin-LOL
