doing your own puppies dew claws?

We bred boxers for 13 years. We always had the dewclaws removed by the vet at 3 days. Our vets typically charged $3-5 per puppy and they did it at the same time we had the momma checked after the birth of the pups so no extra trips to the vet. I would always recommend getting it done on any active breed. We bought 2 puppies that did not have their dew claws removed, and both of them at some point in adulthood during a romp or run, cought the dew claw and tore it. Very painful for the adult dog. Vets as well as individuals can miss the nail bed on a puppy(although the vets if they are careful will get it). We have had adult dogs with misformed little claws that were done by a vet, and by an individual at home. A misformed toenail will grow if the nail-bed is not completely removed.

And a vet I would hold to a higher standard no questions here.

But my winning thought was if not legal in the state I bought her from then I would have even more leverage.

Just wait. You can have them removed very inexpensively if you just wait until she is having another procedure like a teeth cleaning or a spay. Like I said, I just had a dog's dewclaws removed that were not done at the breeders. They did it when they cleaned her teeth for an extra $25. It does not have to be expensive if you piggy-back the procedure with something else. It's not a big deal to have it done later.

I missed this post jamie but she was flown in from indiana and I had no idea the dew claws grew back....until I could touch her and yes that was a bad choice to buy something site unseen but everything else seemed great and I did a lot of research on this puppy and but I did ask if they were removed I never thought to ask who did it. The breeders reply was yes they have been removed it is a standard of AKC so I did not think nothing of it till I got her.

I am asking all you if anyone knows if it is illegal in indiana and how could I find out.....I don't know if it is or not for that state.

I know that but I can't have her in AKC events till it is done and she is already 6 months now. I am not planning on any procedures for a while she does not need teeth done and I am not getting her spayed.

You can call the county animal control or Humane society in the county the breeder lives in and ask them what the laws are regarding home removal of dew claws

Good luck with her.
