We have our chicks on the way. We decided to go with Dominiques because they are not nearly as common as the BR, but still have (from what we've been told) the personality we are looking for. We live in Oregon, right now near Bend but are moving to Sweethome at the beginning of summer, so that's where the birds will live most of their life.

Any other Dominique fans? How are your hens and roos doing, how do they stack up to other breeds you've had?

We have 15 chicks (straight run) coming, hopefully at least half hens. Extra roos will be fried chicken, but we'll probably keep at least two. Would love to find other Oregon breeders to maybe get replacement hens/roos from to keep our flock strong for many generations. We are ordering from a hatchery, knowing they probably won't be the highest quality of the breed, but were unable to find any of this fabulous breed's chicks available in our area. Found one older roo on CL, and two hens in Medford, again, older.

We may show for fun, and to get a judge's opinion on which of our hens/roos are the best, but not seriously competitive with these guys. They will mostly be there for eggs for farmer's markets and hopefully next year some nice chickies to roast up. We had thought of getting an egg incubator so we can incubate the eggs ourselves so we can have more cooking chickens

Leonard is my Dom roo. He is simply the best roo I have. He is gentle with the hens, good watch roo. My Dom hens are very dependable hens. Great brred to have. I live in Indiana, don't heat my coop, doms are doing great in the cold (and about 10" of snow). They did well in the summer. I have 11 Dominiques, just love them, very friendly breed of chickens.

bobsbiddies is is a member on here in Ga. and he lives not too far from me, but I got some awesome Dominques from him him one time, but I just grwo them off to sell and I sold them all before they started laying, but I'm really thinking about getting some more from him to start my own little flock of them since I love old heritage breeds and I would like to preserve them. I will be getting Javas too. Here is a roo that I got from him that my anut now has, (his leader spike on his comb has been dubbed off though) He sells and ships sexed chicks for a great price if you would like any. His name is Bob Berry and you can contact him at <[email protected]> or his website bobsbiddies.com.

I currently have a less than year old hen who hatched out two chicks, not hers, and while she is a good mother she is not letting me in the bin to touch them chicks. No how, No way. She pecks at me and gives me the evil eye. I'm lucky I can get my hand in there to remove her poops. They are big and stinky. She's in my office. Anyhow she's a hatchery girl and she went broody, very young. They don't lay big eggs but they are nice in my assortment.. To me having all the same breeds running around your yard is like having all the same coloured flowers in your garden.
