Dominique Breeders

Has anyone ever heard of a " Red Dominique " ?

Or know anything about them.
To my knowledge, this was a type of Dominique that was around for a very short time , 60 -70 years ago.

In one of Mark Fields books that he wrote, on Dominiques, he made a brief mention about the" Red Dominiques " .

But for sure, anyone alive now that would know anything first hand about this type of Dominique would have had to have been a
young boy around that time period when this type of Dominique was made.

We have a flock of these birds that came to us from a very reliable source concerning their trueness to their type of breed.
All chicks have been hatching 100 % true to their mom and dad.

Rose combs, yellow shanks and toes, and reddish bay eyes are showing up within all chicks hatched.

I am just trying to find anyone who might know, or have some first hand knowledge about this almost non existent type of
Dominique.

thanks,

Yes, I will try to get some pics posted.
The birds are very striking, and beautiful.
Especially the Roo. He has a Crele pattern, and the girls are brown bared with hackle feathers a chest nut color.

We have never posted pics on here , so wish us the best.

As the hens mature, they get alittle darker.
But the grow up pullets that we have, that are 61/2 months old are alittle lighter than the parent Hens.
I will take pics of both so you may see the difference.

Sorry for the late reply.

These crele birds are very beautiful. I don't know much about breeding crele other than I've heard it's a very difficult color to work with and I have to believe that just looking at the nice ones in the show ring so much to get right. Perhaps it would be helpful for you Crele Dominique breeders to introduce blood from a Crele American Game or another good solid well marked breed to get the color better, then breed back pure for several generations but hopefully carry the improved color with them. You will have issues with the backs and tail juncture for a few generations but hatch hatch hatch cull cull cull.

I am actually glad to see folks working on another color variety of American Dominique, and this seems like a valid color to work with them in. If several of you work together and get them up to type and color standard you could always petition to have them put in the APA standard, if enough breeders were breeding and showing them.

Again I don't know much about the color genetics here but I think what we are looking at in the old bloodlines maybe severely bronzed birds - I know I think it's Julie Gupton of Dans La Lune said she had some males so bronzed they looked more gold than grey. I think a true "red" Dominique would have to be red based cuckoo, vs. crele pattern like these guys are. I know they call them red Dominiques but that's just like they used to call all barred birds Dominiques - a misnomer that should be corrected to reduce future confusion, I think.
