The breed that probably qualifies most as a heritage fowl is the Dominique. They are terrific foragers, very calm, and quiet around the farm and are the first breed developed in the US. There is also an active club dedicated to the preservation of the breed and bringing it back to the standard of perfection for the breed. Most club members are willing to share their stock, to get more people into raising them. They also taste better than most production breeds, and the eggs have darker yolk color. They are very good at hiding in the weeds when danger is near. Contact anyone in the Dominique Club of America for help with finding some of these chickens. They are a delight to raise.
