I may be getting chickens this spring and I want a domonique rooster. I had one last Summer, about 6 months old. He was called Big Guy. He was a real sweetie to me and my brother, but towards the end of the summer he began to attack my dad. We got rid of him (not because of the attacking) and our neighbors that we gave him to, who have about 15 chickens, said that when he came he attacked the other three roosters and the hens. Many of their hens are now bald... In the end, the butchered and ate him

They also had another Domonique rooster named Little Guy (brother of Big Guy, named because he was much smaller than big guy most of his life)
He was also a nice, sweet rooster until about one month ago, when he did the same things as Big Guy and they ended up having to get rid of them.
Do any of you have domonique roosters? Are they all like this when they get to that age???
If you dont have a Domonique, what kind do you have and are they nice? I really don't want to have to deal with a mean rooster.

I don't have a Dominique rooster, so I can't help you with that.
I have 3 great roosters, Leo-Silver Lakenvelder, Lurch-Black Langshan and Celery-Partridge Rock.
There are some wonderful boys to be had.
The one piece of advice I will give you is this-DO NOT get a Leghorn rooster-mine was like a demon spawn-he was vicious!
Good luck whatever you decide.

My Dom rooster is Satan's spawn...We got him last September..he was already grown. He was good in the beginning, we could pick him up and stuff...About 2 months ago, he started sidestepping, dancing, and charging us and the fence..we can't turn our backs on him for even a second..right now we are putting up with him, but he is pushing it...seriously...wish I could help more!

I had 8 dominiques once...they were delicious!!! And they really are. My doms were terrors...they tore my girls up. They were loud and just rotten. I have heard some absolutely love theirs. It is normal when a roo becomes sexually mature to go thru a kind of mean (actually dominate) phase for awhile. My other did. He did calm down. But the Doms never calmed down, until they went to freezer camp. I have a Chantecler roo from Ideal and he is really gentle to us but a bit flighty. He has never pecked us when we worm/hold or anything. He is rough on my girls though, their backs are missing feathers. I am going to cull him for this reason, he's tearing them up. He is the bottom roo though. They are marshmallows. They are very sweet and not very noisy. A rare breed dual purpose, so you may want to look into them. Mine is a little shy/flighty though. Hope this helps.
