Donkey Thread

@Love Donkeys I believe this thread is for you!

I'm planning on getting a mammoth donkey in the future as a guard when I get a herd of dairy goats. This would my retirement dream which is a long way away... I don't have the time to commit to more animals yet.
If you plan to have a Donkey as a LG you would need a Jenny (female) or a Gelding (fixed male). Only have one Donkey as a LG. When there is two or more Donkeys they will form their own little herd and they will only protect their little herd....

A Sicilian Donkey (aka Mini-Donkey, Sardinia Donkey, Jerusalem Donkey) is only 24" to 36" to their withers. (the withers is the highest point on the back at the base of the animals neck) Since they are small and weigh under 400lbs they could also be attacked by 4 legged predators....

Pure bred Mammoth Jackstock Donkeys can be very expensive $800 to $12,000+. Our Jenny's were bought at livestock sales, we out bid the "killers" for them and paid $250 a piece. They were in very poor shape, malnourished, lice, worms, overgrown hooves and 100% terrified. They now have a forever home.

Get the largest Donkey you can find, Jenny or Gelding. Keep it quarantine in a paddock separated from the livestock it is to protect, but close enough for sniffing and viewing each other. When the quarantine period is over it's introduction time. Your Donkey will decide to make the other livestock it's own herd....

If you bring new livestock into the protected herd you must do it SLOWLY, quarantine in reverse. If you just put the new animal into the herd your guardian Donkey may think it is a predator and kill it. You will need to feed the protected livestock in an area that your Donkey can not access to prevent fighting over the feed.

Donkeys can be very pushy when food and snacks are evolved. The photo is my husband (6 foot tall) keeping a gate between him and the girls while he gives out munchies. Donkeys can live 30+ years.

Great info! I wrote your notes down. Also, that's so great that you saved them and they're living their best lives now!
