Don't even have the chickens yet

You guys seem to have a mixture of different types of chickens. Is there a reason for that.
Can silkies survive Pennsylvania winters?
Do you put a lamp or warming device in the coop?

silkies tend to be picked on because they don't look like other chickens. Due to their big crests and beards their vision is obscured and they may seem" slow" - if the crest and beards are trimmed back you will discover they are not. Due to their type of feathering they aren't good flyers - so usually pile up in a corner of the coop for sleeping. I don't believe they are hardy in very cold climates. My friend has had silkies for many years but as house pets but they go outside to poo and come right back in when it's cold.

There are many dedicated SILKIE threads on BYC, if you put "Silkie thread," in the search box some should pop up. They would be best at advising you about co-mingling with other breeds, and temperature/climates they can tolerate. They are beautiful and generally docile. Kids especially seem to love them and it isn't strange to see them tolerate clothing and being pushed in a doll stroller.

Who are you asking Missy? We have different chickens mostly because we adopted from different people. In addition, it's easier to tell them apart when they don't look the same and we get several different colors of eggs...

OK, thanks for the reply. It is too cold and the snow is too deep to go out and get you a picture of my shed. It is really large and up off the ground. I do use it for storage so I could only dedicate part of it for a coop. Just don't know how that would work out. So Hosspak do you have a converted shed as housing for the chickens

Drumstick Diva. Love the hat. OK, thanks for the information on the Silkies. I will look for others that will be compatible with the Barred Rocks. Do you know of any breeds that would be compatible with the Barred's
