I have a silkie bantam that is 7 weeks old and when I bought my chickens they said that they were all hens but here lately in the morning he has made these really loud gobbling sounds...its not exactly a crowing but its not just hen clucking either...It sounds as if he/she might just be developing his crow...is it possible that it is just a very loud obnoxious hen?

most poultry suppliers only guarantee about 90 percent sexing accuracy, so you may have a rooster!

are the other chickens making grown chicken noises or are they still peeping like baby chicks? it can take them a while to figure out talking so the best thing to do is wait for them to grow a while. if it is a rooster he will let you know sooner or later.

That really depends on the breed. Some take 6 months and some 3-5 weeks.
Its all so frustrating when you dont want to get too attached if you cant keep them all

Oh I know what you mean... I ordered Straight Run white silkies from Ideal and 4 turned out to be roosters... I couldn't decide which one to pick at first, but I chose one with the sweetest attitude. He also had the best foot feathering out of them all.

Not to mention it also depends on quality to sex them. I could tell one of my Silkies was a roo at six weeks!
