Hello to All,

My name is John and I hail from southeastern Wisconsin. I live on an old farm with my wife and two step-daughters. We want in on the chicken deal and really are excited about the prospect of having feathered friends around the farm.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

No chickens yet, but I hope to be up and running by the spring time! I have no familiarity with chicken other than at the dinner table.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

See above!

(3) What breeds do you have?

I dunno, we love eggs and so do our friends, so any suggestions for a first timer is greatly appreciated.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Just started googling...isn't how all quests are intiated nowadays?

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Writing, farming, reading, family, working out, playing guitar, cooking, star gazing and looking for new hobbies

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

My wife and I have been together two years. I've got two children who are now in college and her daughters are 11 and 9, respectively. I am a heath care administrator who works with senior living communities and hospice. We are also going to get another dog after labradoodle named Daisy passed away this past fall. Thinking about a Burnese Mountain Dog...or something else gentle and bigger than the coyotes and foxes we've got everywhere around here. I've got the best wife and children in the world, and we live on a great little farm with 80 of the 85 acres leased out to a soybean/wheat/sweet corn farmer.

I've been lurking here for the past two months but we are now committed to having chickens up and running by end of May...I've got a couple of suitable outbuildings and barns but we've settled on a big storage shed we have which is close to the house, spacious, and well-ventilated, with electricity available and plenty of room for a run. With all the hawks, owls, coyote, raccoons, foxes and whatnot in the area, we will have a nice run but no free ranging birds.

I'm building the coop inside the storage area next month, and since we live in a cold climate and the storage area is secure but not weatherized, I'm trying to gather suitable ideas. I'm searching like crazy but if anyone knows of a good link to building an inside coop for about 12-15 birds in a similar situation, please steer me in the right direction.

Thanks, it's great to be here!

Welllllllllll here's pic of my polish hen, a red cap from the top, other assorted poultry, including turkeys, and of course......... the dog team....................... Life in Alaska!!!!.....................LATER

You'll love your new hobby! I got my first chicks last January...started with 5 different breeds because we just couldn't make up our minds. Now, I'm not even sure how many breeds I have (with more on order)...and I love every one of them! All my chickens are great, and they each have their own personality regardless of their breed or how they're "supposed" to act. So my advice is to go for one of those Hatchery Assortments. You'll get a little bit of everything...lots of color in your yard and lots of color in your egg carton. If I was going to start a new flock, that's what I would probably do.

I got the first birds of my own in late august last year. 7 Easter egger chicks(although we lost 1 to a hawk along the way) they are a great "mutts" (They were sold from the feed store as Ameruacana/Araucana-but you can only get these breeds from breeders, not hatchery chicks.) I highly recomend them, they come in all different colors and some have beards and tuffs(sp?)! I free range mine and they always come running when I walk outside and follow me everywhere. I have heard they confine well also.. but mine have never been locked up so they dont know what that means! Mine aren't laying yet, but they are supposed to lay blue, green even sometimes pink or other colored eggs!! make's collecting the eggs fun! Welcome to the chicken addiction!! I have 17 in the incubator now due to hatch on monday, and have big plans on multiple coops and breeding some selected chickens! I recommend also going bigger then whatever you think you want to do! Like I said ADDICTION!!! They're just so fun!

From Minnesota. John, It's a tough decision as to what breed of chooks to start out with. That said; it kinda depends what you want out of your birds, lots of eggs, meat, colors and so on. You may want to start out small and build up from there. Whatever route you end up taking, you'll find out they are fun and all of us here at BYC will get you hooked.
