I need experience and suggestions of what to do.

I got 3, 4 day old chicks on March 16th. The EE died June 3rd of apparent respritory failure almost overnight.

Then one turned out to be a rooster and moved to a friend's place.

That left one. We added another one, from a different breeder, and quarantined her for 30 days.

Those two were together 2 months then the original one died. The vet didn't know what it was. She expelled lots of clear fluid with her feces. So, different symptoms. Then I'm told the roo died the same day after vomiting clear stinky fluid. Both, pretty much overnight. Both with different symptoms.

All 3 original chicks came from one breeder. The additional one was from another and 8 weeks old when we added her.

She's the one I have left. The question is how long do I quarantine her for before adding hens? Or should I add any? (Of course after waiting 30 days quarantine for any new ones, too.) She's eating, drinking, seemingly healthy. She's almost 20 weeks old.

I just don't know what to do to be safe. I really don't want to put any new ones in danger and don't know how long to keep this last one alone.

PLEASE!!!! I need help on this one!

Thanks!

wow, you had some bad luck! I dont have any answers for you, but in my experience you might be better off getting chicks than older birds.

Also, were you feeding medicated chick starter, or were the birds vaccinated? I would definitely consider either of those in the future. But hopefully someone who knows more will come along. I have been fortunate in having no sick chickens.

Good luck to you!

sopunds like there was some issue. Did the person who took the roo have other chickens? if so how are they doing?

I would do the 30 quarentine and get a friend from someplace that you know is disease free ask specifically if they have ever or do test for CRD as well as the usual pullorum, avain flu ect.

Where are you located? Have you spoken with the breeder?

you can probably call your state and hae your girl tested and see if she is carrying anything, CRD can be tested with out culling the chicken.

Good info, thanks. I didn't think of that. Yes, the person who had the roo had 2 other chickens and so far they're fine and laying as usual.

Excellent info, thank you so much!

Unexpected illness/sudden death- good reasons to get these birds tested. You are in SF, you are driving distance from one of your state labs (Davis). Think about sending or driving a bird there for the free testing if this happens again. That is the best way to find out what disease (s) you are truly dealing with. It certainly is a bad run of luck with the 3 chicks- 3/3 died before reaching adult hood? The quarantine is always a good idea, but it will not find the carrier state birds. I am near to you, PM me if you don't mind- with your chick source- I am curious where they came from.

But I hear there are quite a few of us in the city. Enough that one of the pet stores regularly carries organic chicken feed and various chicken products. WooHoo! What part of the Bay Area are you from?
