Recieved my shipment of chicks on Wednesday, all seem to be doing great except for one. They all run around like crazy except for the one. She just lies there acting hurt. When she gets up to do anything, she hops around on one leg, keeping the left leg tucked up underneath her. She will go hop over to the water and food once in awhile, but other than that - she is lying down. I don't think she is eating enough, the others are growing already, she doesn't seem to have grown at all.

Here is a not-all-that-great picture - I made her stand up so you could see...

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sounds like it may have injured it's leg during shipment. Have you looked at the leg to see if anything looks broke? It doesn't sound like splayed leg and I'm not sure there is anything to do. Just make sure it gets food and water and hope that it heals. Young birds can even heal broken legs really quickly. Would it be possible to separate the chick with maybe one other chick? That way it's likely to get more rest and heal quicker.

Hi Ima,
I don't know where you are.. but tomorrow you can go to your local feed store or even better a Tractor Supply ( cheapest) if you have one. Pick up a 4 oz. bottle of Poultry Nutri-Dench ( that's plenty.). It is a superb emergency nutritional supplement. It does not need digested which makes it great for babies. Mainlines directly into the bloodstream with 99% uptake in 30 minutes. I have been using it for years on my chicks and won't raise chicks without it. Wonderful stuff. Cost is only 6.99-9.99 . Very concentrated the chick only needs a single drop by mouth. Here's a great thread which explains more and the hows of usage and dosage. I keep it in the water per those directions ( at the lower does) for the 1st 2 weeks of life to give my chicks a strong start.

P.S. if they are out of Poultry-Nutri-Drench you can substitute Pet Nutri-Drops. The tech folk at Bovidr Labs who makes these formulas told me Pet Nutri-Drops is made for small and baby mammals but will work fine on poultry . They said to use with same instructions and dosages as the Poultry Nutri-Drench. I have used Pet Nutri-Drops on my neonate puppies with great success.
