i was feeding the horses and saw my rottie loose chasing the chickens. so i dropped the fork and started running after here. of course i was in a panic yelling at the top of my lungs( not that that would help i dog with one thing on its mind.) to stop. we are talking chasing in 20 about 15 week old pullets around. i picked up a stick and tried to catch her. she was in like a trance, like all the brains were sucked out of her head and she was clueless to the rest of the wolrd. she got one of them in her mouth and i kept hitting her til she dropped it. it got away and i got here inside. i was about to kill her standing there looking at me with feathers coming out of her mouth!!!!
you are wondering where the husband comes in on all this. well he put her on the run.... she got off. he was in his car getting ready to leave while i am chasing her all over the yard, around the coop and threw neighbors yard...to busy to stop and ask him for help, thinking he would be there any second after hearing me screaming(to the point it still hurts) BUT no he drove out the drive way to work!!!! can you believe that?
the chicken hide for awhile. well all of them did. i have her inside down in the basement, in a cat carrier. almost couldn't tell she just went through that til i saw her limping. she looks like she was plucked on a small section on her back but other feathers cover it. she was limping be cause there is a inch hole under here leg. i cleaned it and put antibiotic cream on it. i put paper towels down instead of shaving because i figured it would stay a little cleaner and out of the wound. she is just hunkering down. i think that is good cause it keeps her wound clean and closed...
i am thinking if other chickens that are ripped open can make it there is a great chance for her. wish her luck and quick healing. thanks for listening.

I had the same thing happen to me a couple of months ago. My dacshound was in the back yard and I didn't realize it, let my 5 RIR's out and went in the house for some treats. Came out and he was laying there with the 2 biggest laying dead on wither side of him!!! I was sooooooo upset, I nearly killed him! Then I took their carcasses and rubbed them in his face and beat the *^&* out of him (twice). I was so sad as I raised them from babies and they were my first batch! Well I made a sign that hangs on the back door that says "chickens Out"! Needless to say it took 2 extra months for my hens to start laying after the traumatic site they had! He will walk past the pen now and actually turn his head away from them as he walks by! But I still keep an eye on him. I know he was just doing what he was bred for (hunting), but it was very sad.

i read it happening on here and always say i hope that doesn't happen to me. dogs do it. we all know that. i know she has a bird problem. we live on the river and i have had to get in my row boat and go save her when she almost drowned swimming after geese. she like swam 500+ yards away then decided she was too tired. my neighbors must get a kick out of watching me chase this darn dog all the time. the best sight was trying to see me lift a 100 lb rottie over the side of a row boat without putting us both in.

I had something similar happen last week. But, it was my fault, hubby wasn't even home. I put the dogs in their crate before letting the birds out of their run and shut the back door. I know my dogs are both hunting varieties (chessie and a beagle) and have high prey drives. So, I am out with the birds when I hear claws on linoleum coming up fast. Next thing I know I am screaming like a crazy woman as one dog is on one side of the yard trying to grab any bird it can and the other dog is cornering a bird by the gate. Luckily the chessie listens to me screaming "NO" and comes over, but she is shaking and I know she really wants to go back after them, and I grab the beagle by the collar and drag him off the bird. My youngest son heard me screaming and grabs the big girl (I now have each dog by the collar, but I'm splayed out on the ground from diving for the beagle) and takes her in. I spend a few minutes outside making sure the chickens are okay and getting my heart rate to calm down. It turns out I got careless and only latched the top lock on their crate & they squeezed out the bottom, and the backdoor got caught on the rug and didn't close all the way. The moral is, no matter how careful we are, sooner or later we may slip up just enough. So, don't be too hard on your husband (unless he does it again, that is

). I know my family is glad it was me that screwed up and not one of them, because they would have never heard the end of it.

today is not a day for the chickens. they should have stayed in the coop and never came out, it was cold and snowing anyway. just now i was feeding the same horse and noticed five of the pullets in with him. they must have hid in his stall from the dog or something. well i opened the door for them to come out and they started walking under the horse. just as the horse moved and stood on one the their legs!!!!! it was screaming and i had to push the horse to move over. just got this horse sunday and they claimed it was bomb proof, i don't think they were lying. we know how much noise a screaming chicken can make. anyway i checked the pullet and she is ok. not even limping. what a day! as i always say " you can't make this stuff up" my life story always something.

angie chick glad to hear you saved the day.

and if one more person tells me "its just a chicken". non chicken owners, they just don't get it.

When you love someone or something, it's never "just" anything.
