Blindfold them and offer them a smoke ; but trust me ............ skip the last meal or you'll earn your man card back .

The last meal will come the day before, The day of they will not get anything to eat or drink.

Glad it's not just me that has a hard time with culling. Seriously I can spend 2 hours a day just watching my chicken's walk around and scratch. My wife and I have killed a few, but I can't eat the meat without nausea. I trying to decide if I should be a vegetarian if I can't kill chickens. I think I'm just too much of a natural animal lover to handle it. My "man card" is in as well.

And I agree about the meaties...they are so hilarious to watch. They try to flap their wings and go somewhere...but they are just too dang fat. Funny runners.

I raised my first six layers in the bathtub of the master bedroom. I could stare at them for HOURS and I held them each several times a day to tame them.

I just care for the meaties in a straightforward way, and if I feel the need to hug a chicken, I go hug my layers. (And yes I do hug and kiss my layers)

I highly recommend getting something you can keep/cuddle before going into any kind of meat situation. Your first experience with an animal always has you vulnerable... you're curious, your heart is full of wonder, and you get attached very easily. With chickens I find the more there are, the easier it is to detatch. 25 is easier than 12 and I expect 50 this time to be easiest of all. Anything less than six would be impossible.
