My poor guy got pretty bad frostbite because I was using a heated dog bowl. His wattles hang down so much there is no way to keep them out of the water. His wattles are now black and they are very swollen. I feel so bad for him.
I've been reading about modifications on other threads here they sound like they might work. Tonight I'm going to try turning it upside down and setting the regular waterer on it so its on the heated base.

Yes it's frostbite, not a burn. A regular chicken waterer with the moat should/would hold the wattles back from getting in the water wouldn't it?

Not necessarily...had 2 roos dip and freeze their wattles last winter in a moat type waterer.
Luckily they didn't swell too bad and healed up just fine.

Am using a heated jug with horizontal nipples this year.
