You should try them! I adore rag curls, super time consuming though. My shoulders usually hurt after doing them.

I had super straight smooth hair growing up. My mom gave me a home perm when I was maybe 10 or 11..
it was awful.

the underneath part of my hair ended up getting so knotted up my grandmother cut some of it out.
After that my hair was never straight or smooth ever again.
I even went and got it professionally straightened once. Nope..did not work. Just made it look dry and frizzy.

I love the look of rag curls. No way I'm spending the time to do it though. It would take me hours.

I usually just braid mine wet and sleep on it if I want wavy hair.
