How big do I need the chicken door to be for a full grown Brahma Rooster to get in and out? Right now I've got the EAB automatic door, and I did get the larger 'duck' size door, but I don't know if even that's going to be enough. The opening is 11-1/2" wide and a about 14" tall.

Good question!

I spent lots of internet time trying to figure that one out.

I was SO FRUSTRATED that no one listed height of different breeds, just weights.

I found that for "large chickens" the size recommended is what you found, 14"tall and 12ish wide.

I had my DH make the door 18" high since I stress about those things, and 12" wide.

My brahmas are still little though....

But that door, with my little brahmas going in and out, looks HUGE!!!!

I am quite sure that the rooster could duck his head if he had too. But looking at my monster size door, I am sure your door will be perfect.

Do you already have your Brahmas? What color did you get?

I got 11 light Brahmas, but they are very far off standard. (as in the have black everywhere, not just neck and tail).

Thanks for your answer. Backyard Poultry magazine did a brahma spread this month, and those birds look turkey-sized. It would be too much work and $$ to change the door now, too. So I've been a little panicky

I got one dark and 5 light. I've got 4 blue cochins, too, but they're not supposed to get as big.

My birds are small, still- they showed up June 9th. I'm not acrtually 100% sure which are the coochins and which are the brahmas yet. 2 of them are pure off white, 2 are almost black... I should have 5 light brahmas in there. wait and see...

ooh! then yours are a bit older than mine.

Mine came on June 15th.

I would think you could tell the difference between the Cochins and the Brahmas by the tail. The Cochins have that rounded almost down turned tail. The Brahmas have a 'real' tail.
