Dose Anyone Know The Answer To This Question?

At evening time, when I put my older chickens to bed (they're now four months old), they crowd and try to get up under each other. They also make some lonesome sounding cooing noises...they can't all be ready to have eggs yet, can they??? I'm just wondering about this behavior. Being a first time chicken mom, I'm going through all this with my first flock, and would like to be aware of what might come next. Appreciate any ideas from anyone who knows a lot more than I do. Thanks.

The can't get pecked if they're if they're right under each other.

Roosting behavior can be odd. Sometimes they jam up underneath each other, sometimes they spread out.

Once they're laying they will settle into a routine.
