Double shell- 2 different colors!

Wow! I am not sure which hen was responsible for laying it. I wonder if it will ever happen again. I wonder if it happens more often then we know. I found it broken so I saw it, but she could lay a double shelled egg and we crack it open into a pan and don't realize it.

When I found the egg it was almost fully covered but cracked. I brought it in to wash it and it lost some of the outside shell. I wonder if the hen was disturbed by our dog while laying it. When I brought it inside to show my son he said to me. "I bet Kirby broke it. He just ran out of the coop" our little cairn may have disturbed her causing that to happen. Wow. It is so interesting. I couldn't believe it when I found it.
Since it takes about 20 hours to build an egg shell, the event that precipitated this result occurred the day before. The egg had to reverse from the uterus into the isthmus and reenter the uterus to stimulate application of an entirely new shell.

Where are my manners, welcome to the forum. Glad you joined. :frow

I think you would notice that if you cracked it.

Canoe, I envision the hen trying to lay the egg fairly late in the day and being disturbed. It gets dark so she waits until the next day to lay it. Since one of the cues for a hen to release another yolk to start a new egg is when the former egg is laid, she never started a second and skipped a day. Of course it could be something else.

For the OP, I really appreciate you posting this excellent picture. I teach chicken classes at community colleges and other venues and pictures like this help illustrate the inner workings of a chicken.
