double walled waterer leaks

I have a double wall waterer. It has a five gallon capacity. When more than one gallon of water is in it seems as though the trough over-fills and water comes over the side. The spring and gasket seem to work fine in that no water comes out until the top is put on.
If I only put in one gallon of water the problem doesn't exists. This thing is less than six months old.
Has anyone experienced this problem and know of a solution?
thanks in advance.

It is possible that there is air getting in from where the handle is welded on top. I had one do that.

To fix it I used silicone caulking on the inside and sealed all around the top. Hope this helps.

I have one of those. Check for grit on the bottom flange/seal, quick wipe and/or smear of vaseline will keep it supple. Might also be that the surface you are using is not perfectly level- if so, have the outflow hole on the low end...
