I live in southern Mich. 4 miles from Toledo, Oh. I don't own any birds yet. Considering
mostly for eggs. Maybe some one can suggest best breeds for my area. And how many
for 1 doz. a week usage.

Hello, I am from southern Michigan as well, Hudson. My favorite breed is the Buff Orpington. My girls are extremely social. They will run up and sit on my feet when i come out to feed them. I have four Buff Orpingtons, four Rhode Island reds, two barred rocks, and three ISA browns. I think my Reds are the best layers by far. I average about six eggs a day on thirteen chickens. Id say maybe start with four of any of the breeds i listed above maybe mix and match it is up to you. Does it matter what color eggs you want? The breeds i listed above are brown layers and are heavier breeds. If you buy a white egg layer they have the tendency of being lighter which will save you money on feed.
