Dove in our backyard all day - what should I do?

We have had a white dove back behind our fence all day today. I tried to take food down to it but it flew away when I got within 10 feet of it... so I just put the food on the ground. It's back now and just hanging out - it's been there or on our neighbor's roof for about 6 hours now. I'm concerned that it's a domestic dove and doesn't really know where to go for food/shelter, etc. I think it's staying put right now b/c it can see my chickens through the fence (we have our dog in the backyard which is why I think the dove isn't coming any closer). Should I do anything?

I dont know anything about doves, but I hope some one here comes up with an answer

Dose it have a leg band? Can you get close enough to see. It probbly knows there is food around the chickens. If it has a leg band I would try to catch it. Then you can go here: http://www.pigeon-life.net/

It has a ( I found a pigeon, now what) section. You might be able to trce it with the band number. I am sending you there because it is probbaly a White Homeing Pigeon.

I know I have the nosiest wild doves in the world at both mine and my mom's house. They just hang out and wait for the next feeding - always watching!! lol

Thanks for all the tips! I tried to go out there again and it won't let me get close enough to see if it even has a leg band.

I might try to see if it stays in the same place once the sun sets... if they get katonic like chickens do maybe I can catch it.

set a small hav-a-heart trap and bait it with seed and laying crumbles. put it to the back of the trap.
Dove will walk in and trip the plate brigning down the door and she is caught.


you will be able to tell the difference between a dove and a pigeon, the pigeon will be much larger than a dove.
Chances are it escaped some ones dove coop or was intentionally released as part of someones wedding

which is common practice,( notice I didnt say a good one).
Responsible people will collect the birds after a wedding a lot will not as the doves are cheaply bought for this reason.

Doves make wonderfull house birds, easily tamed and easily kept.
Males will sing to you , wonderfull sound very calming.

Yea I kinda have sorta the same issue. We found this baby piegon at QuickTrip a while back and the other babies were dead so I took it home and raised it for awhile and then when it got big enough to fly I released it and it will not go away. My dad knows nothing of me raising it and just sees it and wants it gone because they tear up the roof. So he tried shooting it and I wasn't sure he got it I know if flew away. Well yesterday I went outside and it was sitting my door and its limping so I caught it and I really don't want to hurt it I looked and its feathers are matted down under its wing kinda on the hip like it had bled I don't see the bullet hole though. I have him now in a dog kennel with food and water and some wood shavings. I named him Valient.

Most of those "doves" are actually white Homing Pigeons, and return to their coop.​
