Dove into Chickens

I'm curious if it's your australorp that is having some butt problems. We have had that problem with each of our Lorps. A probiotic supplement helps, along with keeping it clean with a warm washcloth.

The only one I had a problem with was a Dominique. I checked on them all this morning and she seems to be doing well. As if on cue she pooped in front of me. LOOK MA!

Hi @Sinoel ! I don't know if I will be breeding chickens, yet. Most likely not if at all. I really just wanted chickens kept mentioning chickens to my husband along with attempts of being cute and affectionate. I think all and all he knows I am more like my mom that I like to think- that if I get something in my mind I'll probably do it anyways. I don't particularly like people telling me I can't do something. It gives me more fuel to prove them wrong.

@Gtown-chick How are your welsummers? My peeps have all been named and they know I am the BRINGER OF THE FOODS but they still go crazy when I try to pick them up. I do think my Margo put in a good word for me. She came back unharmed after her adventure with me, so they may be warming up to me.

I upgraded to a larger box a few days ago and put in a branch for roosting/entertainment the other day. It's about as wide as my thumb. Is that too small for them to roost on? Most have tail feathers a half inch to inch long.

Hi!
My Welsummers seem to be doing great! I bought a 1/2" wooden dowel at Home Depot and they seem to really like roosting on it. They have quickly outgrown the dog crate I had them in! Put them in a coop that I bought for them that is supposed to go outside eventually, but it's in my house now! Sadly, I'm pretty sure one of them is a rooster. Feeling pretty bad that I'll have to get rid of him. My kids aren't going to be happy about it either. It's so funny, my cat has absolutely no interest in them, but my dog barks at them constantly. Just hope the weather around here warms up soon so I can get them out of my house!

That's great. My peeps are trying out their wings now. Some of them think it's funny to climb up the branch and fly onto another chick's head, sometimes while they are trying to sleep. I will have to dig out some wire cloth from the shed to cover the top today before they attempt to fly off the branch and free range in my craft studio!

My husband and I have also managed to get most of them to eat out of our hands. We changed our approach after I re-read the Socializing chickens article and it's working. I've even had two stand on my hand to block others from the food.

They all have names now. Bernadette (formerly Bertha- I just couldn't force such an unattractive name on a pretty girl) and Tilda are my gold laced, Gladys and Margo are my Dominiques, and Agatha and Nellie are my australorps. Out of them all, the australorps are the most timid. Is that a breed trait or just my peeps?
