Do doves really need vaccinations?
I don't have them living with other species of birds. They are about 5-6 feet from the chicken coop with 4 chickens. They are in sheltured idividual wire cages outside and I keep the cages pretty clean all the time. I don't know a whole bunch about doves, but I am trying to understand common and practicle practices. Thanks

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. I've had doves for a few years now, and have only had one young one with pox. Never had any other cases of it, or any with PMV. I don't vaccinate my pigeons anymore for the same reasons. Had PMV with my pigeons a few times back when I was just starting with pigeons and wasn't aware of all the health stuff...and didn't have the best-ever-quality birds/feed/setup to start with. I've had two squeakers at the most, get PMV since then (I've had pigeons for almost 9 years. So those two are within about 6 years). I can't remember ever having any pigeons with pox. One day I do plan on starting it up again, but right now it is just too much money.

So basically, if you keep them clean and healthy, the viruses shouldn't bother them. Preventive supplements can help keep their immune system strong, like apple cider vinegar and garlic.
