My doves recently had their first baby this year. Actually when i was feeding the birds last friday i noticed something moving in the nestbox, when i went to take a closer look it was a baby dove. I was sooo surprised i absolutely had no idea my birds had a baby, nonetheless knew they laid eggs. I was amazed that for the first time my doves could hatch an egg in the middle of freezing winter. Anyways i was soo happy and surprised about this bird. Today when i went to go check up on him i noticed that he was not moving, i found out that the bird has passed away. I felt so upset especially when the baby parents were looking at him, thinking everything was ok. It was so cute. Its such a sad thing to happen, its one of the worse things i dislike about raising birds or animals for that matter.

I have lost several pigeons by letting them breed in the cool weather...it is a good reason to seperate them...but I don't

Awww, I feel for you.

But, hey, at least you know that you can get babies in the future. And, now you know to watch for babies and eggs.

Maybe bring them in?

I probably should of removed all the nestboxs before winter came to prevent them from breeding but then again they can build their own nest and removing the nestbox might not stop them. I just hope they could wait at least a few weeks until the weather gets a little warmer.
I have land in NC and hopefully when i move there maybe in a few years i won't have this problem, i have a cousin across from the property that has 75 doves of which he started with about 6 or 7 doves that i gave him from my flock (i now have about 15 doves), and he also has about 200 rabbits. It just amazes me how we both have the same birds but somehow weather/ where you live plays a huge role in breeding. I just cant believe that he has so many birds and rabbits, they wont stop. Many of us wish we had that kind of luck.
