Hi - I lost one of my hens to a dog attack recently. I've moved the remaining 4 to a bigger, more secure run. However we are now down to an egg a day - Blanket, who was badly injured by the dog, is strangly, the only one laying! I noticed recently that two of the hens appear to be building a nest in some undergrowth - could they be planning to lay outside the nest box? The 4 hens are just over a year old

They could be getting ready to hide a nest or dust bathe.

You can mark a couple eggs (or golf balls) and put them in the box. This helps let the girls know it is safe to lay in the "new" spot.
