Why would my drake attack my son? My son was peeking in the barn (standing outside like he always does) and my drake can charging after him, wings spread out and started nibbling on my sons legs. Scared my poor son to death, he started running and screaming and the drake kept chasing after him trying to bite his legs... I got my son and the drake went inside with the girls. And when i went to the door, the drake came closer to the door and make like a growling sound (best way i can describe it) and I thought he was going to charge after me too.... Why would he all of a sudden act this way?

Maybe he thought your son was a threat to his girls? I don't know..If that was my duck and it chased and bit my son or daughter, it would be dinner.

Maybe your son was provoking them. You know kids... Ducks are not known as aggressive species, it probably felt personally threatened. Chances are, it was provoked. If it was a naturally aggressive duck, you would have been no stranger to it acting aggressive. Yes, you can eat it, but it won't solve the underlining problem.

We went back outside and my son was minding his own business playing and the drake ran up to him again and starting biting his legs. Also when my girls got off they bus he ran up to them before they even got to him and started biting their legs as well...... I don't know, maybe he is having a moody day today, i noticed his girls were avoiding him too. He even came after me a few times. I ended up giving him a "time out"

and put him back in the barn by him self for a little while.... when i let him back out he was a little better and his girls allowed him to join them. So i don't know.

doesn't sound like he was being provoked. sounds like he is just being aggressive. he might need to removed permanently. or have your kids keep a broom handy to brush him off, so to speak.

I seriously doubt that your son was doing anything to provoke the drake. It's the breeding season, and testosterone levels are at an all time high. Just as some roosters become human aggressive some drakes become human aggressive. Glad to see that you were smart enough to realize that your son was not at fault. This behavior is very likely to continue into the summer but should lessen as we go into the fall. Fencing the drake in or an attitude adjustment might be in order.

Ahh...the joys of duck mating season! Sometimes drakes get crazy ideas and see threats everywhere. If he's never done this before, he will probably get over it soon. Maybe he was just trying to impress one of his ladies by showing them how big and tough he was to take on a human!

Some drakes go nuts during mating season and unfortunately it doesn't seem to go away. There are so many nice drakes that need homes so why put up with a jerk? The last 2 drakes that we overly aggressive to me or the hens ended up dinner. They were delicious.

My remaining drake is very polite, protective of the girls, and eats from my hand. He is safe.....for now
