Drake Jail...need advice

@cheezenkwackers @AprilsZoo
I surely hope he settles down, but who knows. I decided to add a section of fence and re-work some stuff with what was up, add a little room and something new to ferret around in I let him out and he wasnt out 2 minuets and he had to go hump one of my runners. everyone gets along fine but he has been horny as heck lately. I am going to rearrange their pools too, which should ease at least some swimming problems.
their slope is not super steep, I mean, it is my lawn.. but it does pitch down, as soon as I can get down there with the dump truck to bring in fill they are going to get a whole new habitat built especially for them complete with infinity pool and permanent fence, frost proof hydrant and their own shrubbery...something nice, but not too expensive:plbb
things won't dry out enough to cross until the end of may probably so for now they live there. they are under a grove of maple trees but no they really don't have anywhere to hide from each other, my goal with the shrubbery is to create a sort of miniature forest for them hoping to use cedar shrubs or something like that. give them shade, areal protection and some entertainment. if Sir Winston doesn't shape up its into the air fryer with him!...well probably not....I talk a big line but I don't think I could do that.
honestly we really like him, he's a super good guy...until just recently.

We had a very unlikely flock, 4 hens and 4 drakes, but not by choice. We had two drakes that we were told were females. Anyway, one of our drakes was a Cayuga. Beautiful to look at and large. But he was definitely the dominate male since all of our ducklings that we hatched had Cayuga traits and coloring. He really got busy with all our females which are two Rouen, one Pekin, one Khaki Campbell. I had to get rid of him though because he was constantly raping my young Barred Rock chickens(apparently he felt he wasn't getting enough tail with the lady ducks). But he escaped every "jail" I put him in until I finally found a dog crate.

Hey, if you wanna build an infinity pool in someone’s habitat, come on over my way… of course, I mean human habitat... 😜

What industry insider do you know that an infinity pool isn’t expensive? Pricing a new pool recently, we realized right away that an infinity was way out of our budget.

Me.
How old is he? He sounds sexually frustrated. Has he been able to successfully mate the hens? You really bit the feathers on his neck? :celebrate
i am going to say he has be successful

the one who has a 1200 gallon poly tank out of a fire truck he intends to bury in a sidehill and fill around.. the equipment is all sitting here, I just need people (customers) to leave me alone long enough to do it!

I think we've discussed this same topic elsewhere, but I'll offer our experience again here in case other folks are reading this thread and having similar issues. We have a small flock of large breed ducks (all silver Appleyards) with five hens and one drake.

From April to September, we have to manage the flock to insure that our drake Angus is being "kept in check." Generally overmating is not the issue, rather it is dominating one or two of the hens (e.g., running them down and standing on them, but no effort to mate).

In the morning, we let everyone out together for ~1 hour of supervised free ranging. Angus will have sex with his favorite girls in the pond, but we make sure he isn't running anyone down and standing on them (or other dominant behaviour). Some days he is really good. Other days the "G" in Angus's name is silent. When we call them in for breakfast soup, we then make a decision based on how he has been acting. If he's being Angus with a silent G, we separate the flock into two groups in adjacent fields, where they can see each other and all lie down together but separated by a fence. We mix up the groupings each day so we don't further develop any cliques. We then release them all together again in the evening for about an hour of supervised free ranging.

At night, we have an area of the run that is 4'x8' and which is fenced off from the rest of the run. If Angus is Angus-with-a-silent-G, he goes into that area. We call it his "special fort" or "the Hole" depending upon how we are feeling about him at the time. Sometimes his best girl Mouse goes in with him. They will then all sleep right near each other all night in the run with just the wire fence separating them.

This flock management usually stays in place until September and then all at once, the issue goes away...until the following April. It's kind of a pain in the butt, but we're used to it now. The flock gets used to it too it seems, and often Angus will go right into his "special fort" on his own. We do love having a drake around, so it's worth it for us. I hope that helps.

Mine will be let out in August or September. Right now, if I turn my back on him for even a minute he bloodies the necks of my two lowest girls (he has 5). As he has gotten older he has gotten worse and his jail stay has lengthened.

How long should a drake be "jailed" for bad behavior
Unfortunately "jail" doesn't usually result in an "evolved," "woke," or "more sensitive" drake. We will keep our drake mostly separated from the girls he harasses the most now through August or early September. They do all free range together 2x per day, but we supervise them pretty closely. We also mix up the groupings from day to day to make sure to not form any unnecessary cliques.
