I bought two supposedly female ducks, that we now think are drakes. We just have the two ducks and two chickens, that's all we wanted in total but from looking online, we see that drakes can pose a real threat to chickens during mating season. We don't want to get anymore ducks so the only option may be to rehome the drakes.

We don't want to get to the point where our ducks damage or hurt our chickens so we want to be proactive in our decision. Had anyone had just drakes and chickens together and it's worked. Everything I read says it's not possible and I'm worried about waiting too long, until a serious problem occurs and the chickens are hurt one day through my lack of action.

The ducks are 18 weeks old and haven't tried mating the chickens as of yet. Here are some photos, they have a quiet quack and have a little flick on their tales, but not sure if it's enough of a flick to definitely be a drake. What do you think?

Thanks in advance!

Definitely drakes. The safest thing would be to house separate or re-home. I have had drakes with chickens that never showed an interest in mating the chickens but I've also had a drake who would seek out the chickens obsessively to mate. Also the drakes could be fine this year then next year decide they want to mate the chickens.

I have never had any issues, but I do have one female to one male. I am currently looking for another female though, because as I had posted on here Henry has been very aggressive. So if one of them does turn out to be female you may still have problems. Mine are Muscovies though, and I know duck breeds are different.

And I have them in with my chicken by the way! :)

if they are drakes you MUST keep them separate from your hens, esp as you only have 2 hens.

Drakes will repeatedly rape them throughout the day. Forget 'mating season', they will be rampant 12 months of the year. The hens will run and the drakes will chase them constantly.

I had a similar situation with 2 drakes, albeit with a bunch of female ducks and more hens than you, and it became intolerable. My hens didn't get damaged but it wasn't fair on them being subjected to that distress every day. And it was brutal to watch.
