I was kinda thinking that due to the coloration-more dull than most drakes of that age, isn't it?

I see no curl in feathers either and I would think at that age youd see a hint??

I know this sounds bad but i had a picture of me and a female gadwall that i shot opening weekend of duck season and it has an orange bill. my vote is hen

First things first, I knew as soon as I looked at the pics it's not a mallard wrong feet color, second mallards don't have those kinds of white wing feathers. I raise all kinds of wild ducks along with mallards and I promise you that is not a mallard, it looks like a hen gadwall but I have yet to raise them, but from the ones I've shot in the past I'd say hen, but on top of the shoulders they're are some interesting colored feathers. But my guess is hen gadwall.

Thanks everyone for all of this information. It seems to be molting a little now... so maybe the true colors will come in. There is such a mixture of things going on - on it's back.

I was just talking to my son who now lives in Seattle. He is a birder. He said that next to Mallards the Gadwall is the most common in this area (which I guess is true of a lot of areas).

There is no shooting this one Kansaskid. : )
