So i ended up with 9 Welsh Harlequins...4 ducks and 5 drakes. I had just about decided which drake I wanted to keep when I noticed him mount a duck and then fall off as he was just getting going. His little cork screw never made contact...just shot out to the side. UMMM...is this just inexperience, or should I pick another drake?

Poor little guy!

And yes its probably because hes young. My rouen drake did that all the time with the girls. But now he doesnt do that nearly as much. Heavy breeds tend to need water to do the deed. So once I put my rouens in the breeding pen I will need to get them a better pool. How old is your drake?

Inexperience. They are rather clumsy at first. Isn't everyone?

Also, it's more natural for ducks to breed in the water--attempts on land are more challenging. So it's no wonder it takes the poor guys a while to get the hang of it. He'll figure it out!

These ducks are from an April 18 hatch so they are about 5 months.
